August 2-3 Weekend Recap | Thoughts on Learning to Be Still

August 4, 2014

For my little family, this weekend was all about taking a step back to soak up the silence and stillness of no pressing appointments or overhanging to-dos. We caught up on sleep, made a mess of the living room and spent quality time together. Makeup wasn’t important, and neither was the unnecessary need to perfectly capture a cup of coffee or a beautiful, Instagram-worthy moment.

Lately, I’ve been struggling to stop glorifying busyness in my mind, in my relationships and on social media. For as important as those to-dos are, so much of the richness of life happens in the still, quiet in between moments. When I glorify my busy schedule and focus too intently on making it all happen perfectly, then I leave no room in my life for margin or for life itself. Maybe you’ve been wrestling with similar feelings, too. All that I know is that while I don’t do life perfectly, I want to live it fully, authentically and to the best of my ability. Right now that looks like a little less social media and feeding the need to be constantly connected and a little more time clearing my schedule for still moments. Remember that no matter how busy your days are that it’s so important to make time for face-to-face conversations and little moments of stillness. Life is made up of lots of wonderfully simple, blessed moments that we often miss when we bury ourselves in a hectic schedule. Don’t take for granted those moments of stillness in the midst of your long to-do lists – chances are something amazing is happening there if you only look closely.

I’m definitely introverted – though love having plans with my friends. We’re getting busy with work as the fall/holiday seasons are right around the corner (I’m in marketing) and people generally being more social in the summer, I’ve planned down time on at least one day a week where I turn off computer/ipad/phone, grab a book or a few magazines, go for a picnic or just stay in my pjs all day (woo Income Property marathon on Sunday) and allow myself a day or disconnect so I can decompress and focus on my well being. Also, 2 days of hot yoga each week. Committing time to myself has been therapeutic and rejuvenating.
