The start of a New Year often finds us reflecting on what we want more of in the year ahead, what worked, what didn’t and how we can continue to grow in our personal and professional lives. One practice I’ve been implementing ever since I learned of it from my sweet friend Lara Casey is choosing one word that I want to truly embody in the year ahead. I know I’m not the only one who chooses a “word of the year,” and I’ve loved seeing friends and colleagues sharing the words they’ve chosen on social media over the past few weeks!
During my holiday sabbatical, I dove into my annual process of reflecting on the past, strategizing for the future and dreaming big. And as part of that process, I love choosing my word or phrase that I’ll strive to truly live out as we enter into a new season of life. So this year, I chose “courage” as my word. In it’s original Latin, the word Courage meant, “To speak one’s mind by telling all of one’s heart,” and I absolutely want more of that in 2017!
A desire to honor my personal sense of self and authenticity lies at the core of all I do, in work and in life. And if I can take thoughtful steps to cultivating deeper relationships, more intentional business decisions, and even better experiences for my sweet clients by courageously telling all of my heart, then I am all in! Personally, I believe courage isn’t always comfortable, easy or even our first response to a situation. Which is why I also believe choosing Courage as my word of the year requires intentionality and a commitment to being mindful so I can honestly choose courage, even when it isn’t easy.
P.S. My Cultivate What Matters PowerSheets have been hugely helpful in my annual prep. I highly recommend them if you’re in the market for a truly intentional goal setting tool!
