But what exactly does brand strategy mean and how can you work it into your approach as a designer?
This strategy is such a powerful concept that as a designer you can leverage to transform the brands you build.
I definitely think brand strategy has become a very common buzzword in the design community lately. It’s honestly no wonder so many people are spending time talking about what it is and how it can change the way you design for your clients.
But before you jump on board, it’s important for you to understand what brand strategy is before you can actually start to implement it into your own process as a designer.
WHAT IS BRAND STRATEGY?
Brand strategy is a long-term plan designed to propel a brand toward a very specific set of goals. To do this you need to dive deep into your client’s vision, mission, core values, differentiators, brand message, and their ideal clients. With this at the core of your design, you can create strong visual assets that deliver results and propel your client forward with a strong foundation to success.
As a brand designer and strategist with over six years of experience, I wasn’t always leveraging brand strategy as a part of my design process. I know crazy, right?
But I quickly realized in order to stand out as a designer I needed to do something different. I began to look at my design process and considered what it would look like if I took my clients deeper than just the design work. With a background in journalism, I’m very passionate about people’s stories—so I began to create a brand strategy process that shares their story through the work they do. With their values, goals and desires in mind, I’m able to design with purpose and create a visual brand that speaks to the heart of their life’s work.
Once I discovered how incorporating brand strategy into my design process transformed the kinds of results I delivered for my clients, it completely transformed the way I market myself as a designer.
HOW TO INCORPORATE IT INTO YOUR PROCESS AS A DESIGNER
A few weeks ago, I had the absolute joy of getting to chat about this topic with Kory and Krista, the duo behind the Get Back To Design podcast. We talk all about what brand strategy is and how as a designer you can leverage it within your own design process.
I think it’s so important that collectively, as designers, we’re on the same page when it comes to what brand strategy looks like. Often times, I see fellow designers think they are taking their clients through a brand strategy process when in reality they are only scratching the surface! Which is why I’m so honored to share my story and experience with other designers on this really fun interview on the Get Back To Design podcast.
