Hey fellow creative, I see you working so diligently to grow your business. You have your offerings and services down to a science and you’re loving the work you do with your dreamy, ideal clients—but there’s one part of the puzzle that isn’t quite fitting for you, and that’s your brand. You have a beautiful business that is continually growing, and your brand is also growing with you. But because of this, I see so many of you rebranding every year. (Or what feels like every year!)

If you find yourself changing up your website design, hiring a designer, investing in new logos or business cards every single year—or more times than you can count—that tells me that something about your branding process is not serving you well.

The Reason WHY You’re Rebranding Every Year

The real reason why you’re rebranding every year is that you have unintentionally built a visual identity around current design trends.

Am I saying that following design trends is a bad thing? Absolutely not.

I’m a designer and I spend a lot of time on an annual basis keeping up with design trends and being aware of where our industry is headed. But there’s a difference between being aware of trends versus being so heavily influenced by them that you build something that is trendy, not steadfast.

I’ve had so many of my custom branding clients in the past come to me and say they loved their logo, website, and overall branding for the last few months—but they’ve simply outgrown it way faster than they thought they would.

Whether they went the DIY route or hired a designer, the reason WHY is because they built a brand that was unintentionally inspired by what was trending on Instagram or Pinterest.

Their brand was not built with a clear strategy in place.

How to Create A Brand that Lasts

Friend, here’s the deal. You can choose to build a brand that’s trendy and then subsequently find yourself rebranding every year as the trends change—which if you asked me sounds pretty pricey—or you can choose to invest in a strategically designed brand that is built on a solid foundation.

When I work with my custom branding clients, I guide them through my signature brand development process where we hone into their vision, mission, differentiators, ideal client voice, and so much more.

In fact, we do this even before we get into talking about a color palette, font pairings, or all the pretty things we often think of when we think about branding.

We do this so that I’m able to go into the design portion of our work together with all the information I need in order to choose design decisions that will equip my clients to connect with their ideal clients.

Through this process I’m able to understand their wants and needs and inspire this connection with their ideal clients through the use of color, type, illustrations and icons.

The thing is I wouldn’t be able to do that if I start first with the design and the brand strategy comes as an afterthought.

Think of it this way, friends. If you choose to invest in a strategically built brand that is cemented on a solid foundation, that’s the kind of brand that will grow with you, no matter how the design industry changes.

Fads and trends will come and go, but your brand will endure.

Build a Brand with a Strong Brand Strategy

I encourage you to think about what your intentions are when it comes to branding your business. Do you want the kind of brand that will keep up with current design trends and is always unveiling a new look—which in the long run is costly and confusing to your ideal client?

Or do you want a beautifully polished, elevated brand that is built on a solid foundation of brand strategy that will grow with your business AND will give you the space to create a dependable and consistent connection with your ideal clients?

I’m a little biased, but I definitely know which option I would take.
