Why You Should Stop Charging Your Worth as a Designer

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I don’t believe in the whole “charging your worth” mentality. Now, before you start throwing tomatoes at my face, let me explain.

When we are faced with a pricing dilemma, we all have been told the infamous advice in this industry: “Charge what you are worth. Raise your prices.”

But sweet friend, that is easy, feel good advice that doesn’t actually help you.

By charging what we are worth, we are tying our self-worth and self-esteem into our pricing. And when someone rejects our service or products, it feels like ultimately they reject us.

There goes the confidence you’ve worked so hard to build…

And by charging your worth, we aren’t taking into account what the product or service is worth to someone else—the person actually paying.

THE CHARGING YOUR WORTH MENTALITY

One of the biggest things I’ve learned over the past eight years is that this is business. Although designing and sharing your creativity can be such a vulnerable thing, what you do every day is your business.

We need to learn how to leave emotions out of it, because YOU are worth the world.

You are worth everything—simply because you exist. Don’t charge what you are worth and have the price tag make you think that’s all you’re worth.

You are MORE than a number.

Let the market decide your pricing. Get people to vote using their wallets.

Now I get it, you’re sitting on the other side of this screen wondering: Okay yeah, that sounds great but how do I price my services? If charging my worth doesn’t help me, what does?

I’ve got you, sweet friend!

HOW TO BREAK FREE FROM THE CHARGING YOUR WORTH MENTALITY

One thing that has helped me more times than I can count inside my business is this: Prioritize money-making tasks.

Look at what you actually are spending your time on and compare that to the results you are getting.

I want you to STOP charging what you are worth because YOU are worth everything! But your product or service is only worth what the market is willing to buy it for.

When your product or service is tied to your self worth, that is a very scary thing because when someone rejects what you sell… they are rejecting you.

And all those negative emotions of failure, anger, resentment are paralyzing you from moving the incredible business you have forward.

This is why we need to take the emotion out of it.

STOP CHARING YOUR WORTH AND INSTEAD CREATE VALUE AND PROFIT

Instead, we need to create opportunities for value and profit. 

In order to take your business to heartfelt new heights, I believe you need to do some thoughtful work to elevate your process.

This is a crucial part of the puzzle that allows you to serve your clients better and incrementally raise your rates. With a strong brand strategy in place you can charge more little by little, which then allows you to transform the amount of income you’re able to take on or the amount of income you’re able to see on a monthly basis.

When you put all those pieces together by implementing a clear proven brand strategy process as a part of your offerings, you’re able to serve your clients better, increase the value that you provide, and raise your rates.

So sweet friend, don’t get hung up on pricing, stop charging what you are worth, and start focusing on creating profit and value.
