As a designer, you’ve built a business that is meant to serve not only your clients, but you as well. In this episode of The Brand Strategy Podcast, we’re joined by Steph Wharton to discuss building a foundation in your business and creating a plan to land consistent clients you love working with!

Find what you want and do the work to get there.

Know What You Want

Designers can get stuck on their foundations or strategy. This means they’re not sure how to execute a plan or market their brand.

Confidence comes through in your work and business when you know your plan, messaging, and ideal client. The best way to find each of these is to look at the purpose of your business.

What do you want? How are you defining your success? What are you striving to build? Clarity will come in your foundation when you have a purpose behind it all, so fig deep enough to find what you want.

Develop a Plan & Strategy

When it comes to your business, are you hindered by thinking too short term? If so, you’re likely not planning ahead for the big picture.

You may be used to thinking about working with your existing clients and not looking ahead at what your plan is for booking clients in the future.

Sometimes we forget about the big picture when we’re focusing on one thing at a time.

You can’t make intentional moves forward, if you don’t know what you’re pursuing. Think through and plan what makes sense for you so that you are running a sustainable business.

Are You Making This Mistake?

Are you saying yes to every opportunity because you want to have the success you see in others? This mistake can force you to feel a sense of inadequacy or comparison. Long-term, it will cause you to end up working with the wrong clients, on the wrong types of projects, and force you to face burnout.

We all have our own definitions of freedom and success.

As a business owner, you have the answers that will make you happy. You’re the CEO of your own brand and you need to trust that you will make the best decisions for you.
