Building a Legacy

Many of our businesses begin out of a desire to find passion and fulfillment in our careers, which in turn allows for a sense of legacy to built through that journey. In 2019, Jasmin knew she wasn’t getting what she wanted for her life in the healthcare industry, so she decided to go after building a legacy. She quickly felt inclined to help expert take their expertise to the stage and create sustainable income through speaking.

What’s the importance of being legacy driven or focused? At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what it is that we’re doing in our business or what kind of business we have—if we’re not legacy driven or focused, we will lose touch with the most important person that we should be connected with and that’s ourselves.

Four Reasons to Be Legacy Driven

  1. You’ll get to a place where you decide what is important to you and then live it.
  2. You’ll always be focused on long-term success versus short-term success
  3. We have to focus beyond just the end of our lives.
  4. We are living a more fulfilled life.

No matter the industry, each of these reasons can make an impact on your life. Legacy is everything. It’ll help you in every aspect of your life and connect with those what are important to you.

Creating & Building a Legacy From the Podium

In building her own legacy, Jasmin found that she thrives in helping others building their legacy from the podium. So many entrepreneurs want to speak and share our message, but oftentimes we allow fear to take the driver’s seat and we miss out on these opportunities.

Our voice is one of the strongest marketing tools that we have, so we can’t let that fear or the doubts take over. We all let fear take over, but you have to debunk these myths and beliefs that are keeping you from stepping on that stage.

Debunking Myths of Speaking:

Myth: I don’t have a book or a NY Times Best Seller.
Truth: No, but you have a message.

Myth: Don’t have a tragic story.
Truth: No, you just need to be able to connect with people.

Myth: I don’t have the perfect insert insecurity here.
Truth: Your delivery is more important than your appearance.

Build Momentum By Sharing Your Voice on Stage

Once you’ve overcome the fear and are ready to take action to building your legacy from the stage, Jasmin has two major steps for you to take.

Tackle the mind trash—find the lie.

  • Build your confidence with empowering resources
  • Curate an experience with your message that you love
  • Find an inner circle that will help you along the way

Create a signature offer, then curate an experience.

So Jasmine, thank you so much for joining me today.

Jasmin:

Thank you. I’m so happy to be here, bro. I cannot wait to have this conversation. Me

Bonnie:

Either. I’m so excited to get a chat with you in this way. And um, for those who, uh, don’t know you yet, would you mind just kind of taking a minute and sharing a little bit about who you are and what you do?

Jasmin:

Yeah, so I am a trained dental professional. Y’all what am I doing here on this business podcast? <laugh>

Jasmin:

Well, I, I had a love affair with te since I was the age of 13, became a dental assistant. First through high school, went into dental hygiene, decided to choose to focus my education on serving people who are from modular population. So I worked with persons living with HIV, dealing with substance use disorder and, uh, devoted my, my work specifically to that population and those dealing with trauma. That was really amazing because it led me to working as an educational consultant with a school of medicine and eventually going into teaching full time. What I did not know was that my own Unhi trauma would come into fruition. When I went into a very toxic work environment. Mm-hmm <affirmative>, um, I experienced burnout. I lost my mother unexpectedly and all of that at made me question where I was in my life and what I was doing.

Jasmin:

And that was the first time that I really thought about legacy because I was living an unfulfilled life. And so that legacy driven decision I decided to make was I decided to leave my job and start my business. And when I started my business, I reached it into my toolbox and I gathered what I was good at and that was educating. So I started speaking, hosting events all around the country and built an amazing brand in dentistry. But I knew that in 2019, it was not enough. So I left healthcare and decided to re pivot and brand my business. And y’all, that is not for the faint of heart <laugh>, but, uh, for some way, somehow God saw it fit for me to still make it. And I’m here. And the work that I’m doing now is that I help experts take their expertise to the stage. I help them build their legacy from the podium and help them get to a place where they can create sustainable income through speaking.

Bonnie:

Mm. That is so amazing. And hearing about how, uh, just a little bit about your story and this journey of how you got to this point where you’re doing the work that you’re doing. Now, I have so much respect for just the way that you kept legacy at the center of what you were doing and you made some intentional moves and some probably scary and intimidating moves that helped you go in that direction of pursuing that sense of legacy and probably chasing what success looks like to you. Would, would you say that that’s accurate?

Jasmin:

Absolutely. Um, I think that’s the missing piece in a lot of entrepreneurs, life and a lot of professionals life. It’s why so many of us now that you know, this big trend right now is mental health and burnout mm-hmm <affirmative> and that’s because people have forgotten that fundamental piece. I would love to share like four reasons why we need to be legacy driven. Mm. Because at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what it is that we’re doing in our business or what, what kind of business we have. If we’re not legacy driven or focused, we will lose touch with the most important person that we should be connected with and that’s ourselves. Mm. So number one, when you become legacy driven and legacy focus, you truly are going to get to a place where you decide what’s important to you, not anybody else, but to you.

Jasmin:

And then you begin living it. And this is beyond the metrics that we need to track every single day as business owners. Okay. It’s about what we need to get done in that day. That’s an alignment with what makes us happy. Number two, when you’re legacy driven, you’re always gonna be focused on long term success rather than just short term what’s happening. So in the instance of me being in a toxic work environment, if I looked at my circumstances, if I looked at the fact that I, you know, I came from the hood in New York city, I didn’t have much growing up. If I looked at everything that was going on in my life at that time, I would never have been able to pursue the goals that I have. Right. Mm-hmm <affirmative>. And so we won’t be able to pursue our goals in times of chaos or any uncertainty. If we’re not thinking beyond what our current circumstances are. Number three is that we have to focus beyond just the end of our lives. It’s not what we are leaving behind for the people that we love, but really the decisions that we make every day to contribute to an amazing life. And then number four, when we are legacy driven, we are living a more fulfilled life, mentally, physically, spiritually, all the things earthing <laugh>

Bonnie:

Oh my gosh, Jasmine, I, I love that I’m over here. Like you you’re just taking me to church because I am just, my heart is resonating with this idea that when we step into that idea of legacy and when we choose to pursue action, that is an alignment with that legacy that like everything changes, right? Like what you’re describing is is this not just, you know, a business that looks pretty on the outside, but like this life that is so rich on the inside,

Jasmin:

Right? Yeah. Yeah. And there’s so like from my work, it doesn’t a matter who I’m working with. So I’ve had the blessing to work with people in healthcare fields. I have the blessing to work with people in all different types of service based businesses. Mm-hmm <affirmative>. And every single thing that I’ve just outlined is something that I have seen in my own life and in, and in theirs and behind these perfectly curated feeds, we have entrepreneurs who are struggling, right? Mm-hmm <affirmative>, they’re just, they’re not happy. And, and we already know that when we got into our businesses, when we left our nine to five, when we said, Hey, y’all, I’m not coming back. Right. Like some of us really left <laugh> mm-hmm <affirmative> with a huge statement. Why are we suffering in our businesses? Why, why isn’t there joy? Why are we still taking that corporate mentality into our businesses? And so when we look at legacy, it really is everything it’s gonna help us create better connections with the ones that we love. It’s gonna help us say no to, to the contracts that are of coming in from potential clients or corporate partners that are not in alignment with what our values are. Mm-hmm, <affirmative>, it’s just going to help us truly be in a place where we feel that we’re worthy and deserving and our life matches that. Mm

Bonnie:

Yes. Amazing. Well, I know that one thing you said kind of before, before we got into this incredible discussion about legacy is that you really focus on helping your clients and your students through the work that you do is you educate them on speaking. You said that help them, uh, create that legacy and build that legacy from the podium mm-hmm <affirmative> and I’d love, I’d love to hear a little bit more about what that, what that looks like and, and how you help entrepreneurs create that kind of impact and use speaking as a medium to do that.

Jasmin:

Yeah. So I, I can’t tell you, it never fails no matter where I’m at. I always have someone that’s like, I, I would love to do it. I, but, but I have, but I have, but this right. So there are so many myths that are out there. I would love to debunk like the main ones that are out there. Yeah. But you know, many of us want to speak, we wanna get more visible. We wanna share our story. We wanna make a bigger and impact. We wanna increase our income, right? Mm-hmm, <affirmative>, let’s not forget about that. But we often are prevented from actually sharing our message because speaking intimidates, many of us, we allow fear to get in the way. Um, and we allow that anxiety to come, come into the receipt of our life and prevent us from sharing it. And, and the reality is, is that when we take the stage, there are risk.

Jasmin:

It’s a huge amount of vulnerability that’s required to get up on stage. There’s a lot of hard work that happens behind the scenes, but there’s something so amazing when you can use the most powerful tool that we have, which is our voice to impact and transform people’s lives. And it is the, one of the most strongest marketing tools we have when we can get up on a stage and share our message. So I love taking people that often will say, I have never written a book. That’s one myth. I don’t have a New York times bestseller. How can I share my message? Well, you don’t need that. You don’t need a New York times bestseller to be able to do that. I certainly didn’t have that, but I had a message. Right? I had something, I was authentically who I was in that process. And so people want to get to know you it’s just like any, any sort of relationship that you have. There are people that are waiting to hear your story. Another myth that kind of comes up a lot of times when it comes to speaking is they feel like they need to have a very traumatic, sad story in order to connect with people. Right? Some, some people feel like I have had had to survive some, you know, monstrosity. I don’t even know if that’s even a word, but that’s a word in my vocabulary. Go with it.

Bonnie:

<laugh>

Jasmin:

Of a challenge in my life. And that’s the only way. And no, you just need to be able to connect with people. You need to understand that fundamentally, no matter where we are in our lives or where we’re from, we all want the same thing we wanna be seen. We wanna be heard. We wanna be valued. We wanna live a fulfilled life, right? Mm-hmm, <affirmative>, there’s so many. And you’ve you see this? No matter how many times you’ve, you’ve interviewed people, we’re all no matter where we’ve grown up. I grew up in New York city in Queens. We still wanna be happy. We still want to be able to connect with, with people and you can do that. So those are some of the things. And then one more, one more I wanna share. Um, and that is that they need to have the perfect hair.

Jasmin:

They need to have the perfect dress. They have to have the perfect accent. I’ve heard people say that no one wants to hear me because I have an X, Y, and Z authentic accent from whatever country they, they come from. And what people have to understand is that when it comes to our delivery, it’s always about how you make them feel. People often will overlook what it, it is that you look like. I felt like I needed to have straight hair when I was speaking. Mm-hmm <affirmative>. I felt that I couldn’t go out there and speak. Cuz at that time there weren’t any other brown dental hygienists out there speaking and sharing that message. Everyone was older, white females around the forties, fifties mm-hmm <affirmative>. And here I am coming over here, sharing a topic that makes people clutch their pearls <laugh> but I still went out there. Right? Mm-hmm <affirmative> because it’s about how you make people feel and how you’re able to connect with them. And most importantly, you know, understanding that you don’t need all these accolades or a certain number of vanity metrics to go out there and share something that’s meaningful that can touch people’s hearts and help them transform. Mm-hmm

Bonnie:

<affirmative>, that’s so empowering to know that there are, you know, just these, these myths that we can bust, that we can like just, you know, work through them and walk through them. And on the other side, like you’ve been talking about on the other side, if we are able to overcome that fear or that self out, that message that we have is so powerful. And like you were saying, the way that we can connect with an audience and the way that we can make people feel that is so incredibly, so incredibly powerful. Um, I I’m curious. So, you know, obviously there are these common myths or these common beliefs that keep us us from owning our voices and keep us from stepping up on that stage. Mm-hmm <affirmative> but what are for those who are tuning in today and who are following along and they’re saying, yes, Jasmine, I hear you. I, I identify with this myth. I’m gonna, you know, work on, kicking it to the curb. How do, how do they take action? How do they continue to build on that momentum after they’ve started to reframe the, the self doubt around actually sharing their voice and stepping up on that stage?

Jasmin:

Yes. So it, uh, it’s all in a, with the framework that I use for my, for my own clients. So the first one is really tackling that mind trash. I have a friend, um, her name is Natalie FIS. And I remember I was telling her something that was going on and she was like, Jasmine, she stopped me <laugh> and she was like, Jasmine, find the lie, right? Find the lie. So the first thing is we need to find the lie. What are the false stories that we’re telling ourself that we’re allowing to prevent us from, uh, living our legacy. And I’ll share a quote with you on, on what that can do for us, if we don’t take action today. So first one is you have to start building your confidence. So whether is finding ways in which to pour into you on a regular basis with books or, you know, words of affirmation, meditation, anything to pour into yourself, as you start building up that confidence and finding an inner circle of people that will, that are in that same walk of life as you to help you along the way, because naturally scientist has shown that our thoughts are negative and over 95% of those thoughts are repeat negative thoughts.

Jasmin:

So that means that we need to take the time out of the thousands of thoughts we have every day to make sure that we’re building it up for us to succeed. The second thing is now we need to create the, the first step. If you’re at this point right now that you’re an emerging speaker you’ve never spoke before is now to think about like, what experiences have you had in your life that or experiences you’ve had in your professional life. Something that you could share that just invigorates you mm-hmm <affirmative> that, you know, that can fill the gap and help individuals. That could be your key signature program. So we need to think about like, what is it that we wanna represent? So when I first started out, I started thinking about, wow, I went through school. I had this amazing experience with marginalized populations, but yet I’m meeting clinicians every single day that are still faced with the stigma, because there isn’t any knowledge on, on how to work with this population.

Jasmin:

I’m gonna create a course for that. I’m gonna get on stage and start talking about that and sharing my personal experiences and then giving them a call to action for them to make the changes in their own clinical care. So it can be as simple as that, something that’s happened along your own journey that you feel extremely passionate about and look at creating something that would be your signature talk or keynote or workshop or course. And the reason I say state that is a lot of times when we’re out there and we’re going out there, we’re speaking, we’re looking at, okay, what are the latest trends? Mm. But I guarantee you that when you get on the stage and you may share the latest trend out there, if your heart isn’t in it, the people in the audience will fill, fill that. And that will lead to you never being called back <laugh> <laugh> OK.

Jasmin:

That’s the reality. So the first thing is your confidence. Then you need to create what that signature offer is. Mm-hmm <affirmative> and then you need to curate and experience mm-hmm <affirmative> okay. So that experience needs to happen before you’re on stage during the, a time you’re on stage and after, which is why I’m saying choose a topic that, you know, that makes your heart Saint case. In point, when I first started out, I, I, before I picked into my past experiences and everything that I decided to commit to when I was doing my baccalaureate program and my master’s degree program, I focus on closing a gap, a trend that was happening in my industry. And you know, what happened? I was bored <laugh> I hated it. And as soon as I committed to what impacted my own journey, it was like, boom, just like that, all the emails that I had sent out to people that, you know, Hey, pitching, none of them came back answered as soon as I changed what it is that I was speaking on, because it was in line with what made my heart sing. And I started going out there and sharing my message consistently. The call started coming mm-hmm <affirmative>. So once you build your confidence, you create that signature program. And then you curate that experience with your audience before, during and after, and get visible and share your message. Don’t wait to start. All of that will start falling in line with you being able to create that sustainable income and your, this that’s like as short as I can get it. <laugh>.

Bonnie:

I mean, that was just pure gold. Like, I would not be surprised if those who were tuning in today have like their notebooks out and they’re taking notes because like you’re sharing with us point by point action based steps that we can take in order to overcome that mind trash and action, and start to move in that direction of alignment, which is man. So incredible. So actually you, you have done such an incredible job of, of outlining some steps that we can take and some actions that we can start to listen to and move in that will help us take the at stage, especially if this is, you know, kind of a first time, um, you know, sort of newer concept for, for some of us, one thing that you really focus on with your students and your clients is you, you use speaking to help them scale their impact, their income and their influence. So what are some ways that people can actually work with you and learn how to scale their impact, influence, and income?

Jasmin:

Yeah. So I have speaker VIP days, and those are great for people that are experienced speakers. They’ve, you know, taken the time to have a few gigs here and there, but they may not have been paid, right. Or they may need to refine their systems. The hardest point is for most people, it’s not hard for people to find a speaking gig. It’s hard for them to find consistent, paid speaking gigs and also to make and generate income after they’ve hit the stage. And so that’s what my speaker V I P days are air meant to take a deep dive in the current systems that you have. And then I would help you with refining your message. And then of course I have my program, which I am so excited about it. It’s called legacy scale or heart driven speaker program. It is a three months of curated, beautiful content.

Jasmin:

Um, and six months of support where I take you from the Huda to the Tuda, that’s what I call it. Okay. From head to tell, we go over creating your signature program. We go over how to work presentation and delivery, cuz you just don’t wanna just go up there and read, right? You wanna be able to impact, we talk about how to protect your IP. We talk about contracts. We talk about new negotiating, your, um, fee and setting your fees. We talk about the process of positioning yourself as a speaker and getting visible. So there’s a whole side of speaking. That’s beyond just your messaging. There’s a real true business side. And so with that, can we work together for three months? We conclude it with an amazing speaker retreat and we help support you in making this a sustainable source of income by giving you all that I’ve learned along my own journey and what I’ve been able to help my clients do as well.

Bonnie:

That is such an incredible program. I mean, both of those offers the V I P day. And then also, um, the legacy scaler program, both of those sound so incredible, but I, I love how you are not only showing people how they can secure those paid speaking opportunities, but how they can use those opportunities to make a difference. Mm-hmm <affirmative> in the lives of the, the people who are in the audience and also how they can use that to generate, like you said, that consistent income after the fact. So mm-hmm, <affirmative> um, just in my own experience of, of some of the speaking opportunities I’ve had, um, that’s something that I haven’t seen a huge number of speakers really strategically think about kind of what happens after, or they walk off the stage and after they’ve delivered that keynote or that, you know, session talk. So I’m so excited that people get to learn from you in this way. And I appreciate you sharing all those incredible details with us here today.

Jasmin:

Yes, absolutely. And you know, I, I really wanna let everyone know, especially those who are my mental health warriors like me. I know that for some of us, we, we battle with depression, anxiety, and, and so many other things that impact us as we build our business. But I wanna encourage you that there is no better time than right now. We are not guaranteed another day. Mm. Okay. And there will, you will never be all the way. Perfect. Okay. But that’s what makes it so beautiful. And there’s a quote that really helped me get to a place of, I’m not going to allow any false stories I’m telling I’m not gonna allow any things I’ve experienced as a child. I’m not gonna allow any of my current circumstances I’ve dealt with in the past dictate what I’m gonna do and how I’m gonna show up.

Jasmin:

And I’m gonna tell you why here’s a quote. The graveyard is the richest place on earth because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled. The books that were never written. The songs that were never sung the inventions that were never shared the cures that were never discovered all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem or determined to carry out their dream. And I’m gonna add in, they were too afraid to share or their message on the stage. They were too afraid to create their keynote course or workshop. And so that quote is from Les brown. And when you understand the fertility of life and understand that we’re given such a precious gift every single day to show up, we are alive. We’re BR eating. You wanna make sure you choose and make a legacy driven decision to show up for the people that are waiting to hear your message and waiting for you to tell your story

Bonnie:

That gave me chills in the best way possible that that quote that you read and shared with us is so powerful. And when you think about it in that way of the impact that we can have as individuals, if we just take action, if we just are courageous enough to move through the fear, not to ignore it because fear is, is there for a reason. And yes, we, you know, we don’t wanna ignore it or belittle that experience or that emotion, but move through it. That’s, that’s where that incredible legacy and that incredible impact can happen. And it’s, it’s funny, Jasmine, one thing that I always ask to every person who comes on the show, I always ask them, what’s, what’s one encouragement that you wanna share to those who are listening today. And I feel like you beat me to it. I’d even have to ask you because you, you just dropped that incredible, incredible message for us today. And I’m hoping that those who are tuning in that, that is inspiring them, encouraging them, making them feel like there is something so worthwhile on the other side of that fear. So thank you for sharing that with us today.

Jasmin:

Absolutely. And thank you for having me. I love talking about this. I can talk about it all day <laugh> if it will just help one person to make the decision to go for it. That’s what I’m here for. Mm.

Bonnie:

I love that. Well, Jasmine, where can people find you? How can they hang out with you online and hear more about the incredible work that you’re doing and potentially work with you to take the stage themselves?

Jasmin:

Absolutely. They envision me@jasminehaley.com. I’m actually at Jasmine with that an E <laugh>. Um, so it’s J a S M I N H a L E y.com or they can follow me on social, on Instagram at it’s Jasmine, Hailey. That’s where I like to hang out.

At the end of the day, I'm a big-hearted creative who will become your biggest business cheerleader as you share the heart, inspiration and big dreams behind your business; who will work tirelessly to find the perfect font pairings and color selections to bring your brand to life visually; and who will empower, encourage and equip you to share your work with the world intentionally.
