By now I’m sure you’ve all heard there’s value in “building your list.” But the thought of setting up a strategic welcome sequence that converts has you scratching your head wondering where to even start.

Through my mentoring services, I often see so many opportunities left on the table because of this exact reason. Most creatives I work with already do email marketing in some way. They create a really great freebie or an initial free download and place it on their website for people to land on. But then they aren’t intentionally following up with an automated welcome sequence telling their potential clients who they are, what they do and how working together can transform their business.

So what I want to do in today’s post is share an easy to follow formula for writing a welcome marketing sequence that actually converts for you.

My go-to email welcome sequence formula

Before we dive into this formula, I first want to share three reasons why you should be using an automated marketing sequence to grow your brand and connect with your ideal clients through your website.

BUILD BRAND AWARENESS

The first reason why you should be leveraging email marketing sequences is because it builds brand awareness.

Let’s think back to that example I shared a minute ago about people who are sending one email with a free download, free guide or art print, but aren’t following that initial touch point with a set of emails that land straight in their ideal client’s inbox. Then they are missing on a great opportunity to actively educate their website visitors about who they are and what they do.

But, if you are already taking advantage of email marketing to offer a quality freebie in exchange for a potential client’s email address, well then you have this amazing opportunity to slide into their inbox in a relational, educational, and approachable way.

Maybe this is the first time this particular website visitor landed on your website and they don’t know a lot about you or your brand. Through a strong automated welcome sequence you can now share all of that information through a series of thoughtful, quick emails that gives them all the details they need to know in order to decide, yes, I absolutely want to work with this creative/brand.

LAY THE FOUNDATION FOR A RELATIONSHIP

On top of sharing who you are, what you do and how your work can transform their business, Reason number two to why you should be using an automated email sequence for your email marketing is simple–it lays the foundation for a trusting client-vendor relationship.

Like I just mentioned, email marketing sequences give us a great opportunity to build brand awareness through proactive client education. Which, in turn, lays the foundation for a trusting relationship.

If we think about it, we don’t want to do business with people we don’t know right? And we certainly don’t want to do business with brands we can’t trust.

So if you are sharing content through your automated welcome emails that introduces you as the face of your brand and you share constant free valuable information with your ideal clients, then they will begin to see how they can work with you now or in the future.

And little-by-little we start to break down those barriers that come when we simply are unaware of who a person or brand is. Through a strong automated marketing sequence we are replacing all those questions marks with quality information about who you are, what you do and what it could look like for your ideal client to work with you.

You can easily build trust by sharing a little bit more about you or your team. How you got started. What your favorite things are about the work you do. And your favorite ways you’ve been able to really deliver big results for your clients. That is all laying the foundation for a trusted client-vendor relationship.

You also can illustrate the kinds of results and success your ideal clients can expect if they choose to partner with your products or services through the words of past clients.

CONVERT WEBSITE VISITORS INTO PAYING CLIENTS

Like I’ve been saying all along, if you are getting people on your email list through a quality opt-in somewhere on your website, but you aren’t following it up with consistent emails or an automated welcome sequence, then you are actually leaving money on the table.

Because if you aren’t building that relationship and making it abundantly clear the ways in which a website visitor can work with you, the value they can expect as part of that process, or even who the heck you and your team are—then there is no way they are going to figure out on their own what it would look like to work with you. Why they should work with you. Or how they should move forward with your products and services.

But if you can already show up in their inbox in a relational and personable way and honestly share with them the kinds of value you offer—through free resources and paid opportunities—then it makes it clear what path this potential client should take in order to work with you now or in the future.

Now let me say, just because you guide potential clients—new subscribers—through this automated welcome sequence doesn’t mean they are all going to automatically convert into paying clients.
