How To Intentionally Scale your Business

March 17, 2020

It seems like everyone wants to scale their business these days. From hiring a team to diving into education, there are so many different ways that you can scale your business.

But first, I think it’s important we understand that in order to scale your business, a few steps have to be met.

Before we dive into this conversation on how to successfully and sustainably scale your business, I want us to have a quick little chat about what it actually means to scale. Inside the Heartfelt Brand Society, my six-month group coaching program for creative entrepreneurs, I’ve heard so many different definitions of what “scaling” looks like.

To some it looks like bringing on a virtual assistant or a second and third team member. For others, it looks like adding passive streams of revenue or launching a product. And yet to others, it looks like adding on educational services, stepping into a role as an educator within your existing business, or taking the main stage as a keynote speaker.

There’s so many different ways you can scale your business, but I think it’s important that in order for us to understand how we can successfully make that happen, we first and foremost need to understand what scaling looks like to you.

I believe there is no right or wrong way to define scaling your business. But how do we create the space in our life and business to intentionally scale in a way that aligns with our dreams? Here’s how! | b is for bonnie design #creativeentrepreneur #scalingyourbusiness #smallbusiness

WHAT DOES SCALING YOUR BUSINESS MEAN?

In my experience as a coach and strategist with over eight years of experience in business, I believe there is no right or wrong way to define scaling your business.

If you have dreams of growing—no matter what that growth looks like to you—I believe you are taking brave action to scale your business. Don’t buy into this mindset or belief that because you don’t have the big dreams like building a massive empire that your dreams and the things you’re doing aren’t actually scaling your business and propelling you towards growth.

You get to define your definition of success and scaling. And friend, don’t let anyone tell you differently.

The #1 Secret to Scale Your Business

If you’re ready to take that next step and learn how you can scale your business with intention, then here’s the secret you’ve been looking for: If you’re going to successfully scale your business and take that next step, you need to transition into a visionary role.

When I say becoming a visionary, I mean you cannot continue to play small with your dreams. You cannot focus all of your energy on the day-to-day tasks or do the bare minimum to move the needle forward towards your goals.

Instead, you need to get out of your comfort zone of living that solopreneur lifestyle where you are the one doing all of the work and pushing every project or dream forward on your own.

In order to become the visionary behind your growing business you have to be the one who is thinking big picture. There is a need for you to have someone—even if it’s just a part time virtual assistant on your side—to help take all of the mundane day-to-day tasks off your plate so you have the space to dream again.

BE HONEST ABOUT YOUR VISION

The first way to take your business to the next level is to be honest about your vision. You need to know the big picture of where your business is going, but more importantly WHY your business is going in that direction.

If you’re not able to clearly look into the future three, five, or 10 years from now and assess where you want your business to go, it is going to be impossible for you to sustainably scale.

I mean, how can we ever chase after a future that is fuzzy and undefined, right?

First, you need to figure out that big picture vision in order to understand what smaller steps and projects need to come to life for those big picture dreams to become reality.

And that’s where having support comes into play. Whether you have a virtual assistant, a full time team, or plugged into a purposeful mastermind/group coaching program—having people who can help you figure out how best to take those next steps, delegate the work that’s on your plate, and make that big picture vision come to life is priceless.

I remember a few years ago when I first got ready to dip my toe into this role of becoming the visionary within my business. It was such an intimidating step for me because up until that point I had been the CEO. I was the accounting team, marketing department, client experience/HR department. I wore all the hats of my business and because I had so many hats on my head, I didn’t have any room for one more where I could place that crown of becoming the visionary of my business.

But like I’ve mentioned earlier, not being able to see where you’re going or not having the space to dream big beautiful next level steps for your business, will only keep you stagnant.

And it will make it impossible for you to realistically scale your business—whatever scaling looks like to you.
