Now that the major pieces are set up in the studio, it’s time to focus on putting on those finishing touches through accessories and artwork. Although I secretly love the simplicity of blank walls, it can easily start to feel devoid of personality after a while! And I’ve found that the type of artwork you incorporate into your workspace has the potential to set the tone for that environment. For example, choose all inspirational quotes for a gallery wall and there’s just no way you can walk away uninspired! Joyful colors, inspiring designs and creative textures can absolutely influence how you feel when you spend any amount of time in that space, so it’s important to choose artwork wisely. Today, let’s chat about some of the best ways I’ve found to incorporate visually engaging (and inspiring!) artwork into your workspace for an instantaneous mood boost!
Pick a Color Palette
Before we start going crazy on Etsy, saving every gorgeous handlettered print we come across to our Favorites folder, it’s important to hone in on the specific color palette you want to represent. Take into consideration the overarching colors represented in your workspace. Do you want to complement those hues, or perhaps add some contrasting colors for more visual interest? I personally like to choose one main color to represent, and then at least two secondary colors to add variety. For my office, the main hue is light pink with coordinating shades of white, soft blues and some darker neutrals to ground the entire collection.
Choose a Theme
From florals, to still life, to abstract to everything in-between, there are endless possibilities for your workspace artwork theme! The fantastic thing about creating a specific theme to follow is that you’re able to incorporate whichever types of artwork truly spark your creativity, soothe your spirit or encourage you. Personally, I love mixing more abstract pieces with typographic prints for a modern, eye-catching collection.
Mix Up Sizes
Although a wall full of 16” x 20” prints can be dramatic and impressive, coordinate your artwork with the space you have available. Two smaller prints on the wall space between two doors can have just as much visual effect as one larger print on its own. Try playing around with different sizes and orientations for a collection of artwork, whether hung as a gallery or individually, that fits in well with the space you have available.
Play with Mediums
One of my favorite ways to include even more visual interest and to keep things fresh is through various mediums throughout a room. I may include more watercolor pieces than not, but I’ll also mix in some letterpress or foil prints, full color pieces, or photographs to mix things up. Since I’m incorporating images that all honor the same color palette, it’s easy to create consistency without being monotonous.
