For Designers: Why more clients doesn’t always equate to more income

FOR DESIGNERS! Let’s have a little honesty hour about what it takes to increase your income shall we? I’m here to bust a super popular belief that in order to earn more you need more clients on your calendar. 

Have you ever felt like in order to increase the amount you’re making on a monthly basis or a quarterly basis you have to hustle so hard in order to dramatically increase the number of clients you’re working with?

I know there have been seasons in my own business—especially when I was first getting started—where I believed my income was directly tied to my client load. 

But today I want to share why that belief is wrong.

Why more clients doesn’t always equate to more income for designers

It’s so common for those in the design industry—and actually for the creative industry as a whole—to believe that more income is directly tied to more clients, more customers, more, more, more.

But I believe that if we buy into this mentality, then we are unintentionally adding more to our plate without the promise of more income. 

So I think we need to reframe that mindset. 

If you are believing that more clients equals more profit, I need you to pump the breaks on that belief and instead listen to this: more clients only equals more overwhelm.

Think about it this way: more clients on your calendar adds more emails, more designing, more onboarding, more, more, more.

And yes, you’ll be bringing in more income, but at what cost?

Are you bringing in a handful of extra dollars each month at the cost of spending several hours of your precious time? Are you adding more stress to your plate for a nominal amount of money?

Increase your value not your client load

If you’re taking on more clients in order to earn more I would instead encourage you to increase the value of your services so you can charge more while working less.
