Reframing Your View Of Burnout

If you were to look at what your relationship to burnout feels like, it’s likely anything but positive! I’ve been in that same situation. You feel all of these negative feelings when you reach burnout, so much so that it negatively effects how you look at your business.

What if you changed your relationship with burnout? Yes, stop looking at it with negativity!

Burnout could be an ally or friend that shows up to tell you that what you’re doing isn’t sustainable. Burnout could tell you that what you’re doing isn’t serving you, if you simply listen.

Next time burnout shows up, look at it as an opportunity to grow, show up, and exist in your business in a way that serves you better. The exhale you’ll feel when you release those negative emotions around burnout will empower you to adjust and change your business.

Hey, friend. Happy Tuesday. Today we’re gonna have a little chat about our old PE burnout. In the past, I have talked about burnout on the podcast over on the blog, and we’ve covered everything from preventing burnout, recovering from burnout, really just all the things burnout, . And today I wanna share a different take on this topic with you, whether you’ve experienced burnout in your personal life, your professional life, or maybe both. I know firsthand how unpleasant and how, in some cases, discouraging and depressing that can be. And what I wanna share with you today is something that actually came from, uh, a conversation that I was having with a, a coach recently who specializes in burnout, recovery for entrepreneurs. And she was sharing with me this thought about my relationship to burnout. I was sharing with her that, you know, in the past, I have been, you know, going through a season of burnout that has lasted for years, and that’s been really heavy and really frustrating.

And, you know, I think I keep doing all the right things to recover, and yet I’m not through it yet. And I was sharing with her, what, what am I doing wrong? What do I change? And she asked me, what is your relationship to burnout like when you think about burnout and how that shows up in your life, if they were a person, how would they, how would you know? How would their presence make you feel? How would they talk to you? What would that look like? And as you can imagine, my response was, anything but positive burnout is not my friend. And she encouraged me. What if you changed your relationship with burnout instead of looking at burnout as this heavy presence that wants to keep you down, wants to keep you exhausted and wants to keep you overwhelmed? What if you looked at burnout as this ally, this friend who’s showing up and who’s telling you what you were doing in the past was not sustainable, and you have got to rest and you have got to figure out a different way of existing?

And let me tell you, a lot of light bulbs went off in my brain. What she was telling me was exactly what I needed to hear. For so long, I’ve been looking at burnout as this unavoidable yet incredibly negative presence. But actually, what if I started looking at my relationship with burnout as, as that of an ally, a teacher, someone who cares about me, someone who’s showing up in my life to say, Bonnie, the way that you’ve been running your business, the way that you’ve been running your life, it is not serving you and it is exhausting you, and it is depleting you, please get your life in order. Wow, I would love to connect with that kind of influence. I would love to learn from that kind of presence. So what I started doing is I started talking to myself and telling myself, Hey, what you’re experiencing is not a bad thing.

It’s an opportunity for you to grow, and it’s an opportunity for you to literally create a new way of working, a new way of existing, a new way of showing up in your life and in your business that serves you better. When we are honest with ourselves, if we are in a season of burnout, and we look at how we got there, what we were doing in most cases was not serving us. It was not sustainable. It was, it was the situation of operating and existing at a level that we just could not maintain. And so burnout showed up and said, Hey, why don’t you slow down? Why don’t you figure something else out? Because this is not it for you. Let me tell you the exhale that I’ve been able to release. Wow, life changing friend. I’m hopeful that this experience lands with you today in a way that helps you start to look at maybe the way that you’ve been relating to the season of burnout you might be experiencing. And if you can’t relate, maybe you’re not in a season of burnout, which I’m so glad that you’re not, then I hope that you’re able to keep this advice in your back pocket for later. Because I am confident that if and when you experience burnout, looking at it as a teacher versus an antagonist, viewing it as an ally, ally and not a foe will create more possibility and more opportunity for growth for you. And . Take it from me. You’ll, you’ll be a lot happier throughout the process of growing and recovering.
